Family Planning with Crohn’s & Colitis
Family Planning with Crohn’s and Colitis is part of an art meets research project. Working with IBD Doctors and researches at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and art facilitators at The University at Wolverhampton I directed and animated this short film, looking into the lived experience of family planning with Crohn’s and Colitis.
The researchers conducted in-depth interviews with 12 women with Crohn’s, 11 women with Colitis and 4 male partners, at different stages of family planning. From the interview transcripts, and working closely with the researchers and doctors, I created a script that encompasses the main themes that were found. Looking at both physical health, lifestyle choices and support from loved ones, the film aims to inform and support patients and healthcare professionals during family planning.

As well as this film, a series of leaflets and comics were created by artists Rae Frances and Jess Butcher. Click the link below to view the full project on the CCUK website:

This study has given people with Crohn’s and Colitis an opportunity to voice what they want from reproductive services, from pre-conception to pregnancy and post-delivery. The researchers hope this will raise awareness among healthcare professionals of the key issues around Crohn’s and Colitis and family planning. The artists resources will help women and their partners make an informed choice about their family planning and support training for healthcare professionals.
